Pick up your "green card" and come and join us. 5000 happy, smiling faces can't all be wrong!
We started the Scarecrow Festival in 2004 as a community project. People in the village enjoyed it so much that we repeated and expanded it in 2005. Unfortunately it's such hard work for the organising group, and the population of Whitford is so small, that we can't maintain it as an annual event. It has now settled into a 2-yearly pattern.
It is a very popular attraction for visitors and some people really do arrange their holidays in Devon to coincide with the Festival weekend. In 2007 we estimated that the "audience" was in the region of 5000 people during the weekend. To put this into perspective, it is worth mentioning that the population of the village (without scarecrows!) is only about 200 - 250. |
